Number the Stars

Do you like historical fiction? If you do, you will like this book. In the beginning, the two main characters, Annemarie and Ellen, are stopped by two Nazi soldiers just for running on the sidewalk! Later in the book, the Nazi soldiers are all over Denmark, and all the Jewish people are trying to escape from them. One of the themes in Number the Stars is friendship because the two main Ellen and Annemarie are really close friends. Annemarie had to help her friend, even though it’s scary.

When I started reading the book, it wasn’t so good in the beginning, but later in the book, I couldn’t stop reading it! Every time a chapter started to get really good it would end, and I would want to read more. I think you should read it because it has some surprises. It is interesting, too, for example when the Nazi solders exploded their own ships (which is a real fact from World War II!).

I recommend this book to 4th graders and older because some of the words are hard. I wouldn’t recommend this book to a third grader or younger because they might not understand it.
