In this story a horse named Black Beauty starts the adventure of his life on a small farm in England. He was sold to a man named Squire Gorden. While he was at Squire Gorden's house, he made two friends, Ginger and Merrylegs. They said they would be friends forever. One day something happened that would change his life. First, Merrylegs was sold. After Merrylegs was sold he was never seen again. Second, Black Beauty was sold to a man that owns many carts. Black Beauty was treated kindly because he was groomed until his coat gleamed like the stars at night. Black Beauty was loved by both young and old because he was a beautiful and strong horse. Do you think Black Beauty will be loved by his last owners as much as his third owners? Read to find out. The lesson in this story is: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
While I was reading, I thought, "This is one of the best books I've ever read!" During one chapter I almost started crying because something happens to Ginger that would make you cry even if you are a boy or a girl. This book reminds me of my grandpa's horse Snowball because Black Beauty was a well-mannered horse and Snowball was a well-mannered horse as well. Also, Black Beauty's mother reminded me of my mother because they are both wise and give good advice. She told Black Beauty to never kick or bite and my mother has told me to be nice to my younger sister. The illustrations are made of watercolors and pastels and they are lovely.
I recommend this book to people who love to read children's classics and books by Anna Sewell. Also Anna Sewell's writing style is like the main character is telling the story from his / hers perspective. I also recommend this book to people who enjoy realistic fiction.
